What it takes to compress a fab schedule

The accelerated timeline is aggressive by any measure. Site preparation needs to begin in the second half of 2026, with construction starting in 2027. And a leading-edge fab is not just a building: it needs massive amounts of reliable power, huge volumes of ultrapure water, and a specialized supply chain, all of which have to arrive on schedule for the 2029 date to hold.

Any one of those dependencies slipping, from grid capacity to equipment deliveries, pushes the whole project back toward the original 2030-31 window. Samsung is betting it can orchestrate all of them at once, faster than originally planned.

Betting through the volatility

The context makes the decision sharper. The same day this plan surfaced, Korean chip stocks had their worst session in years, with SK Hynix down more than 15%. Announcing an accelerated multi-billion-dollar fab buildout into that kind of market turbulence is a statement of conviction.
