What PAIR does
Nvidia released PAIR, a free open-source tool that links the idle computers in a home into a single local AI cluster. Instead of one machine grinding through every request, PAIR routes tasks to whichever computer on the network is free at that moment.
The compatibility list is broader than Nvidia’s usual: alongside RTX 20-series and newer GPUs, PAIR supports Apple M4 Macs, and it plugs into the tools local AI users already run, Ollama and LM Studio. Everything stays on the local network.
Why local clustering matters
The practical ceiling on local AI has always been the single box: one GPU, one memory pool, one queue. Pooling idle machines raises that ceiling without a new purchase, and keeping traffic on the home network preserves the main reason people run models locally in the first place, which is that the data never leaves. A free tool that makes spare hardware useful is also a quiet argument for buying more of it, which is not lost on the company selling the GPUs.
