Mistral raised 3 billion euros at a 21 billion valuation

Europe just wrote its biggest startup check ever.

The round

Mistral raised 3 billion euros in a Series D announced on September 8, 2026, led by Samsung, valuing the French AI lab at more than 21 billion euros, nearly double its valuation a year ago. EQT’s Scaleup Europe Fund and PSG Equity co-led the round, with BlackRock funds, Advent and Luxembourg among the new backers. Mistral calls it the largest European tech fundraising to date.

Where the money goes

The stated destinations are compute-heavy: frontier model research, international growth, and Mistral’s own data centers. Owning infrastructure rather than renting it is the expensive path, and the round’s size reflects that choice.

Why it matters

For a continent that keeps debating digital sovereignty, this is the clearest bet yet on a homegrown frontier lab instead of a rented American one. The valuation puts Mistral in a different weight class from every previous European AI company, and the lead investor is notable too: Samsung is a hardware giant buying proximity to a frontier model supplier outside the US axis. Whether 3 billion euros is enough to keep pace with labs spending multiples of that on compute each year is the open question the round does not answer.
