AI agents now burn five times more tokens than people on OpenRouter

The numbers
OpenRouter’s usage data, analyzed by the company’s Peter Walker, puts the seven-day average on August 10, 2026 at roughly 7.3 trillion tokens a day driven by agents against about 1.4 trillion driven by humans typing prompts. Agentic traffic climbed from around 510 billion tokens on February 6 to that 7.3 trillion, a roughly 14x increase in six months, while human-driven traffic grew 2.8x over the same stretch. Walker’s framing is that February 6, 2026 may have been the last day humans consumed more tokens than agents. OpenRouter routes across many providers with a tilt toward open-weight models, so the exact ratio is not the whole industry, but the direction is not in dispute.
A budgeting problem
One task a person kicks off can fan out into dozens or hundreds of model calls, tool invocations, retries and context reloads before anyone sees a result, so headcount has stopped being a useful proxy for inference spend. A single engineer running a few agents overnight can outspend a team of humans chatting. An AI budget still modeled on seats is modeling the smaller half of actual usage.
