An open-source tool that strips AI watermarks passed 6,000 GitHub stars in days
AI watermark removal is now a free download. Days after Anthropic switched on invisible watermarks in Claude’s output, an open-source “eraser” appeared on GitHub and blew past 6,000 stars.
What the tool does
Developer Guillaume Meyer released watermarks-remover under an MIT license. It strips invisible Unicode characters, C2PA manifests and metadata from AI-generated content across PNG, JPEG, SVG, PDF, DOCX, HTML and Markdown, and it names Claude, OpenAI and Gemini provenance marks as targets.
The author is unusually direct about the limits. Statistical watermarks live in the wording itself, so the only way to remove them is to heavily reword the text. This tool cleans metadata and hidden characters, and Meyer warns that no tool can promise a vendor’s detector will fail.
The other side of the argument
The removal tool landed while Claude’s own users were still arguing about the watermarks themselves. A r/ClaudeAI thread titled “Some Claude users are mad that Anthropic’s new watermarks will catch them using it at their jobs, classes” collected 594 upvotes and 174 comments in a day.
Why it matters
The sequence is the story. Anthropic’s watermark rollout became public in mid August, the user backlash followed a day later, and working removal code arrived roughly two days after that. Provenance systems for AI text are colliding with an internet that treats any detectable mark as a challenge. As long as the strongest watermarks require rewording text to defeat, and the weakest can be stripped by a free script, the practical value of AI watermarking will be decided by this arms race, not by policy announcements.

One day after Anthropic began embedding invisible watermarks in Claude's output worldwide, tied to EU AI Act transparency rules enforceable since August 2, 2026, users on r/ClaudeAI pushed back. A post titled 'Claude watermarking our work is unethical and disgusting' argues the human supplied the instructions, context, decisions and refinements, so the tool should not brand the output. A second thread raised watermarks as a machine-readable layer that could be trained into a trigger, a new attack surface rather than a backdoor. Watermarks remain a provenance signal, not a universal detector, and existing documents are not retroactively marked.
