AI reverse engineering revived Spartacus Legends, dead since Ubisoft closed it in 2015

A game Ubisoft killed in 2015 is playable again, multiplayer included, after five days of AI-assisted reverse engineering.

The patient

Spartacus Legends was a free-to-play gladiator fighting game from 2013, a tie-in to the TV show. When Ubisoft shut the servers down, the login’s online check made the game unplayable, and it stayed dead for 11 years.

The operation

A Reddit user (u/IrLOL) set out to fix that with Ghidra, the RPCS3 emulator and three different AI agents. Claude Code made slow initial progress over about 10 hours of work. Then GPT-5.6 Sol took over and, in the author’s telling, cracked the final barrier past the login screen within what seemed like 20 minutes: “I saw a title screen no one else had seen running in real-time since 2015.”

Sol then built its own tooling around PINE, an emulator instrumentation protocol, and made the multiplayer breakthrough. The binary revealed that fights were host-authoritative peer-to-peer rather than simulated on Ubisoft’s servers, so two clients could connect, exchange gladiators, fight, and even post results to the original in-game leaderboards.

What it means for dead games

The author’s conclusion is the story: “these AIs enable people to do RE work that would have taken months before in mere days.” Thousands of online-dependent games have died the way Spartacus Legends did, killed not by their gameplay but by a server check. Reverse engineering was always the cure, and it was always too expensive in expert time. If frontier models keep compressing that cost, game preservation stops being an archival discipline and starts being a weekend hobby.
