OpenAI's first hardware device is reportedly a screenless doughnut priced at $300 to $400

OpenAI’s first hardware device is a doughnut, and it costs more than $300.

What Bloomberg describes

According to Bloomberg, the device is shaped like a doughnut and roughly the size of a hockey puck, with no screen. It carries speaker grilles and microphones for voice conversation, a camera system and sensors that read the room and feed what they see to the model, lights that show when it is listening, and moving parts included specifically to give it personality. It is battery powered so it can travel from a nightstand to a kitchen counter, and it is built in premium metal.

The price discussed internally sits at $300 to $400. The design comes from Jony Ive’s team, following OpenAI’s acquisition of his device startup io last year. The timeline points to an introduction later in 2026 and a launch in 2027.

An AI-first computer, not a speaker

The framing matters more than the shape. OpenAI is not pitching this as a smart speaker with ChatGPT inside. It is pitched as an AI-first computer, a device with no screen whose entire interface is conversation, and whose model is meant to learn one household over time.

That framing is also the hard part. A screenless device that watches the room and remembers its household is either the most useful object in the house or the one that gets unplugged when guests arrive. The device’s core promise, ambient awareness plus memory, is inseparable from the thing consumers have historically been most suspicious of: a camera and a microphone that are always present.

The usual caveat

This is a report, not an OpenAI announcement, and Bloomberg’s original is paywalled. Details discussed internally, including the price band, can shift before an introduction that is still expected months away, with the launch itself a year beyond that.
