Gemini passes 1 billion monthly users, and 63 percent of them use voice

Google Gemini crossed 1 billion monthly users, and 63 percent of them are talking to it instead of typing.

The milestone and the numbers around it

Sundar Pichai announced the milestone in a blog post on August 11, 2026. It makes Gemini the fastest-growing product in Google’s history and the 14th Google service to pass a billion users.

The supporting figures sketch how people actually use it: more than 100 million active users on iOS, over 150 million images generated per day, and one in five Gemini Live sessions using live camera or screen sharing. One demographic detail stands out: parents use voice for everyday queries at a 43 percent higher rate than users without children.

The pace matters as much as the level. Three weeks earlier, Alphabet’s Q2 earnings put Gemini at 950 million monthly users. The last 50 million arrived in under a month.

Why the voice number is the real story

A billion people using a chatbot is a scale story, and scale stories about Google products are not new; this is the 14th time. Two thirds of those people speaking to the product instead of typing is an interface story, and interface shifts are what actually reshape products.

Typing at an assistant preserves the search-box mental model Google has owned for two decades. Talking to it, with a camera or a shared screen in one of every five Live sessions, is a different behavior with different expectations: conversational, continuous, multimodal. The parent statistic hints at where this goes, voice as the default mode for people whose hands are full, which describes a lot of daily life.

The number Google did not share

Google did not break out how many of the billion pay for anything. That omission is the hinge for the next quarter, because a billion free users is a cost line until some fraction converts, and the AI capex funding all of this is very much not free.

The milestone settles the distribution question. Gemini is a mass product. Whether it is a business is the number still missing from the blog posts.
