SpaceXAI's Memphis facility took Grok down for 3.5 hours

The September 3 AI blackout now has an address: a SpaceXAI compute center in Memphis, Tennessee.

The admission

SpaceXAI said its Memphis facility failed at about 6:30 in the morning Pacific time, taking Grok offline for roughly three and a half hours on X, on mobile and everywhere else. In the same apology the company added a sentence that raised more questions than it answered: it was sorry, too, for its “impacted compute partners,” which it did not name.

The partners nobody names

Claude and ChatGPT went down the same morning. Anthropic signed a compute leasing deal with SpaceXAI earlier this year, per Engadget. Neither Anthropic nor OpenAI confirmed a connection to the Memphis failure, and neither denied one. Elon Musk said the company is taking corrective action so the failure does not repeat.

The episode surfaces a quiet structural fact about the AI industry: competing services can share the same physical buildings, and users learn about the concentration only when one of those buildings fails. How many other single points of failure exist across the industry’s compute supply chains is not public information.
