On the day OpenAI declared the AGI era, its chatbot, Anthropic’s and xAI’s were unreachable at the same time.
The timeline
On the morning of September 3, 2026, Pacific time, Grok and Claude started failing around 6:30 a.m. OpenAI reported a routing error from about 7:43 a.m. that made ChatGPT and Codex unavailable for some users. Anthropic logged elevated errors across multiple Claude models. Grok took the worst of it: roughly three and a half hours offline, including Grok on X and its mobile apps.
SpaceXAI later apologized for an outage at its Memphis data center that affected “compute partners,” without saying what broke. Anthropic has a compute partnership with SpaceX but did not confirm any connection. Wired summarized the day in a headline: nobody is saying why.
What the coincidence exposes
Three competing AI services failing in the same window is either a shared upstream dependency nobody wants to name or genuinely unlucky timing, and both answers are uncomfortable. Millions of workflows now assume these tools are always on, and September 3 showed they run on the same crowded infrastructure as everything else. The most shared joke of the day came from r/LocalLLaMA, where a llama.cpp user noted that local AI cannot be disabled.

Reinforcement learning for computer-use agents needs thousands of cheap, independent, real desktops running in parallel, where an agent clicks, types, waits and gets scored, and a Mac mini is a small, power-efficient real computer that stacks by the thousand. Anthropic rents the same machines through AWS. The most powerful configurations have reportedly been sold out for months amid the memory shortage.
Ramp data puts 80% of AI enterprise revenue on 1% of customers
Expense platform Ramp reportedly found that 80% of OpenAI's and Anthropic's enterprise revenue comes from just 1% of customers, based on the corporate spending Ramp tracks across businesses on its platform. Neither company has confirmed the figure, and it is not an official revenue disclosure.
