What Google announced
Google’s own update is blunt. Because Google Assistant on mobile devices is being discontinued, Gemini is now the assistant experience on Android, and on September 4, 2026, most users will no longer be able to use or switch back to Google Assistant on their phone or tablet.
The change does not stop at the phone. Once Gemini becomes the assistant on a mobile device, it takes over the peripherals paired to it too: watches running Wear OS, headphones and earbuds compatible with Gemini, and vehicles running Android Auto.
The rollout is expected to take a few weeks to reach everyone, and Google says it has emailed users whose device or peripheral is affected.
What survives, for now
Not covered yet: cars with Google built in, Google TV, and Home speakers and displays. Devices below Gemini’s minimum requirements, and regions where Gemini is not available, keep Assistant for the moment.
The deadline itself has a history of slipping. The plan was originally end of 2025, then it moved into 2026. The difference this time is a firm date on the calendar and a notification campaign already underway.
A ten year product, replaced one way
Assistant launched in 2016. Ten years later it is being replaced by a product that answers differently, and the migration only runs one way. That one-way design is the notable part: this is not a default swap that power users can undo in settings, it is a discontinuation with a successor pre-installed. For households built around Assistant routines across phones, watches and car dashboards, September 4 is the date the old behavior stops being available, whether or not the new one is preferred.

Gemini passes 1 billion monthly users, and 63 percent of them use voice
Sundar Pichai announced in a blog post on August 11, 2026 that Google Gemini crossed 1 billion monthly users, making it the fastest-growing product in Google's history and the 14th Google service to pass a billion. 63 percent of users talk to Gemini instead of typing, iOS has more than 100 million active users, over 150 million images are generated a day, and one in five Gemini Live sessions uses live camera or screen sharing. Three weeks earlier, Alphabet's Q2 earnings had put the figure at 950 million. Google did not break out how many users pay.
