Claude Code weekly limits drop 17 percent on September 14

Anthropic announced a 25 percent increase that is actually a 17 percent cut, and the way it announced it became part of the story.

The arithmetic

Since summer, Claude Code subscribers have had a promotional 50 percent boost on weekly usage limits. That promotion ends September 13, 2026. From September 14, the permanent baseline rises 25 percent instead. A subscriber whose original allowance was 100 units has 150 today and will have 125 in two weeks, 17 percent less than current usage. The change applies to Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans.

The deleted post

Anthropic’s first announcement led with the permanent raise and skipped the comparison to today’s levels. Developers did the subtraction in the replies. The company then deleted the thread and reposted a version that explicitly acknowledges current usage is going down. The audit mood has continued on community forums, where users have been re-checking other plan framings, including a claim that the Max plan’s 20x multiplier describes the 5-hour window rather than the weekly cap.

Why it matters

Rate limits are the effective price of an AI subscription. The monthly number stays fixed while the usable capacity inside it moves, and it has been moving on both sides of the market: OpenAI restored its own 5-hour caps for Plus users on August 25. The meter, rather than the model, is where AI companies now negotiate with their subscribers, and this episode shows how carefully those changes get read when the framing and the arithmetic disagree.
