A vocational training base for humanoid robots opened in Hangzhou

Humanoid robot training now has a physical campus. The National Pilot Base for Embodied AI Applications opened in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, described as a national-level vocational training facility for humanoid robots.

Inside the facility

More than 140 robots built by nearly 40 companies and research institutions are training across 40 simulated environments, ranging from dimly lit mine shafts to commercial kitchens and farm fields.

The teaching method is physical. Human trainers wearing motion capture suits and holding remote controllers walk the machines through real job scenarios, one demonstration at a time.

The restaurant zone is the clearest picture of the curriculum. A humanoid takes an order, fetches ingredients, stir-fries a dish within four minutes, plates it and clears the table. Other zones cover precision industrial assembly, warehouse sorting, basic agricultural work, housekeeping and shelf stocking.

Why the boring version matters

This is the part of embodied AI that does not show up in a demo video. A language model can describe how to cook. Getting a body to do it repeatedly, in a real kitchen, at speed, is a different problem, and the gap between the two is where humanoid robotics has stalled in practice.

The Hangzhou approach treats that gap as a training problem rather than a research problem. Instead of waiting for models that generalize from simulation, the base collects demonstration data at industrial scale, with dozens of manufacturers running their hardware through the same standardized scenarios.

The vocational school framing is more literal than it first sounds. The environments mirror actual job sites, the trainers teach by doing, and the graduates are meant to go to work. Mine shafts, kitchens, warehouses and farms are also a fairly precise list of where labor is hardest to hire.

Whether the robots trained here perform reliably outside their 40 rehearsed environments is the question the facility exists to answer. But the infrastructure itself is the signal: humanoid training has moved from lab benches to a dedicated national-level campus, with the machines of nearly 40 companies enrolled at once.
