Anthropic is sued over its $200 "20x" Claude Max plan

A $200-a-month Claude plan sold as “20x” is the subject of a class action that says the math is closer to 6x.

The case

The case is Kahn v. Anthropic, filed in June 2026 in the Northern District of California by Washington, D.C. subscriber Karl Kahn, and it resurfaced this week as the story trended on X. Anthropic sells Claude Max 5x at $100 a month and Max 20x at $200, marketed as five and twenty times the usage of the $17 to $20 Pro plan. The complaint says “the actual usage provided by the Max 5x and Max 20x plans is far below the advertised amount,” and asks the court to find the marketing fraudulent.

The emails at the center

The evidence at the center of the complaint is Anthropic’s own July 2025 emails announcing weekly limits, sent separately to each tier. As summarized in coverage of the complaint, Pro users were told to expect 40 to 80 hours of Sonnet 4 a week, Max 5x users 140 to 280 hours, Max 20x users 240 to 480 hours. Divided out, the top plan comes to about six times Pro and the middle one to about 3.5, with the 5x and 20x figures applying only to five-hour session windows. Kahn upgraded to Max 20x in April and says one five-hour coding session consumed 15% of his weekly allowance. Anthropic declined to comment to The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the suit.

Why the timing matters

It is one of the first times a subscription usage cap has reached a courtroom, and the timing is awkward for the company. Anthropic launched Fable 5.1 this week with its own per-tier limits, and the day’s top r/ClaudeAI thread is titled “Anthropic really doesn’t seem to value its $20 subscribers anymore.” The question the court will have to answer is what a multiplier in a plan name actually promises.
