Altman apologized for the Astra rollout with resets for old models

Sam Altman called the GPT-6 Astra launch “messy” and apologized. The compensation is where it gets interesting.

Enterprise first, subscribers later

Pro subscribers normally get new OpenAI models first. This time they watched enterprise customers on the Daybreak security platform go ahead of them, while their own access stayed dark. Replies to OpenAI’s launch posts filled with complaints, and on September 4 Altman conceded the rollout had gone badly.

A reset that skips the thing you wanted

The make-good is one banked usage reset for every day a paying subscriber waits. The catch: the reset applies to the models subscribers already have, such as GPT-5.x and Codex, not to Astra. The apology for missing the new model arrives as extra quota for the old ones.

Altman said he hoped subscribers would get access over the weekend, with no promises attached.

For $200-a-month customers, the episode is a data point about what priority access means when a flagship launch collides with enterprise commitments. The security-platform customers came first, and the waitlist compensation was denominated in yesterday’s models.
