The price board
Tom’s Hardware tracks the cheapest 32GB DDR5 kit in the US at $375. Typical Corsair and Crucial kits sit above $400, and higher-end kits push past $500. Before the shortage, the same class of kit sold near $95. That is roughly a fourfold increase on the commodity component every PC needs, in a category where prices historically only fell.
Where the memory went
The mechanism is capacity reallocation, not a supply accident. Memory makers have shifted wafer capacity toward high bandwidth memory for AI accelerators, which pays far better per wafer than commodity DRAM. Every wafer that becomes HBM for a data center GPU is a wafer that does not become a desktop DIMM.
The demand side shows no slack. SK Hynix has described its 2026 demand as fully booked, and DRAM supply is spoken for into 2027. When a supplier can sell everything it can make for the next year and a half, consumer pricing becomes whatever the residual market will bear.
No relief on the calendar
There is no credible forecast of prices dropping in the second half of 2026. Full normalization waits on one of two things: AI memory demand leveling off, or new fab capacity coming online. Neither happens quickly. Fabs take years, and nothing in current AI spending suggests the demand curve bends soon.
The practical translation for anyone speccing a machine: a PC build priced last year is not the build that is affordable now, and 16GB is quietly becoming a real decision again instead of the obvious minimum. For a decade, memory was the cheap part of the parts list, the component nobody thought about. The AI buildout has ended that, at least through 2027, and the $375 floor on a 32GB kit is the clearest single number for what the data center boom costs everyone downstream of it.
