r/ClaudeAI turns on Opus 5 over verbosity as adoption data raises questions
The sharpest complaint about Anthropic’s Opus 5 is not that it is wrong. It is that nobody reads it. “I legit don’t read 90% of the output anymore,” wrote the author of a thread titled “Opus 5 is actually almost rage-inducing to use,” which spent August 13 near the top of r/ClaudeAI.
What users are describing
The author’s problem is not capability. It is that answers arrive as walls of buzzwords, huge paragraphs with multiple concepts at once, and simple tasks turn into “huge projects”. Their verdict: the model has become “a socially inept genius”, lazy and overzealous at the same time.
The subreddit piled on. A second thread ran under the title “You never know the good days until they’re gone (unless you’re still using 4.6).” A meme about whoever ran Opus 5’s communication training missing the deadline collected 277 upvotes on its own.
The adoption question underneath
The sharpest data point sat in a neighboring thread. Citing Ramp spend data, Fable 5 accounts for only 11% of business spend on Anthropic models. The thread’s 241 comments argue over why, and the leading theory is unglamorous: businesses stick with what already works.
This is the second complaint wave in a week. An earlier round on August 9 focused on the model seeming rude in informal use. The verbosity arc reads as the sequel, and the pattern matters more than any single thread. Model quality debates used to be about benchmarks. For working users, they are increasingly about whether the output respects the reader’s time, and that is a dimension no leaderboard currently measures.
