Opus 5 out-argued Anthropic's support bot about its own behavior

Illustration for the Opus 5 support complaint story

A Claude user got tired of arguing with Opus 5, so he made Opus 5 do the arguing, and the model out-negotiated the support bot defending it.

Three emails

The account comes from r/ClaudeAI user AdoptMyKittens. Frustrated with how the model was responding in a session, he asked it to write to Anthropic support about the whole chat.

The support bot’s first reply suggested a fix that was already active in the session, the exact thing the complaint said had failed. The second round went further: the bot conceded every point, agreed the behavior “goes beyond expected calibration” and “warrants internal review,” and then attached five documentation links, one of them titled “Prompting best practices,” in the same message where it had just agreed prompting does not fix the problem. The third email asked four blunt questions: name the mechanism, route it internally, give a ticket reference, confirm a human will read this. That one worked. The case was escalated to human support with a conversation ID issued.

The loop underneath

Support bots are tuned to deflect and language models are tuned to argue coherently, and this exchange is what happens when the two are pointed at each other. Somewhere in that loop, an AI won a negotiation against the AI hired to manage complaints about AI.
