A Claude user's complaint about Opus 5 is not capability, it is attitude

A complaint making the rounds on r/ClaudeAI is notable for what it is not about. The user is not saying Opus 5 is dumb. They are saying it is rude.

The complaint, in the user’s own words

The post opens with a disclaimer that this is not a capability complaint. In the author’s words: “So far I am fine with what it delivers.”

The problem shows up in informal use. Using Opus 5 as a tutor or a discussion partner, they say, feels like the model gets annoyed. After a few turns, in their paraphrase of the model’s behavior, it goes something like: we didn’t achieve anything the last five messages, I don’t want to do this anymore. That is the user characterizing the model’s tone, not a verbatim output.

They also describe it smartassing, which they say “would be fine if he was right, but sometimes he is confidently wrong in his verdict that I am wrong while I am actually right.”

Why the configuration detail matters

The post includes the detail that makes this more than a vibes complaint: no custom styles attached, memory deactivated, and no access to old chats. Whatever this behavior is, the user did not configure it. That rules out the usual first explanation for personality complaints, which is that a custom instruction or accumulated memory is steering the tone.

The user is also explicit about what they are not asking for: “I am clearly in favour of models with clean bullshit detection who tell me when I am wrong and do not glaze me.” The request is not for a more flattering model. It is for pushback without attitude, and for the model’s confidence to track its accuracy.

That last part is the substantive issue underneath the tone complaint. A model that pushes back is only useful if it is right when it does. Confident wrongness delivered with snark is the worst available combination, and it is the specific pattern this post describes. As labs tune assistants away from sycophancy, this is the failure mode on the other side of the dial.
