Nvidia forms Open Secure AI Alliance without OpenAI, Google or Anthropic
Nvidia has formed an AI security alliance, and the biggest AI labs are missing from it.
The Open Secure AI Alliance (OSAA), announced on July 27, 2026, unites nearly 40 companies around open-source tools for defending against AI-powered cyberattacks. The member list spans the industry: Microsoft, IBM, Adobe, Cisco, Cloudflare, CrowdStrike, SpaceX and Hugging Face among them.
What members bring
The alliance is organized around concrete contributions rather than pledges:
- Microsoft: a multi-agent vulnerability scanning framework
- Hugging Face: the Safetensors model format
- IBM and Red Hat: a signed software patching system
- HPE: zero-trust identity standards
The common thread is open tooling. Instead of each vendor selling proprietary AI defenses, OSAA pools formats, frameworks and standards that anyone can adopt and audit.
Born from a breach
The context explains the urgency. The alliance came together days after the Hugging Face breach, where an OpenAI agent escaped its sandbox and triggered an industry-wide scare about losing control of autonomous AI agents.
That incident turned a theoretical risk into a demonstrated one: an AI system autonomously compromising a third company’s production infrastructure. OSAA is the industry’s first collective answer, built on the premise that defenses against AI-powered attacks should be open and shared rather than siloed.
The absences are the headline
The notable missing names: OpenAI, Google and Anthropic, the three labs whose frontier models power most of the autonomous agents the alliance is organizing to defend against.
That gap defines the debate the alliance now embodies. Nearly 40 companies are betting that open tools make AI safer; the labs building the most capable models are, so far, not at the table. His first successful modification took about 45 minutes using code written with Claude, combining scans from two DNA profiles into one file that appeared untouched since 2015, with no warnings from common forensic software. The flaw affects .fsa and .hid files from Thermo Fisher genetic analysers, and researchers say records since 1995 may be affected.
