Musk and Altman trade insults on X after Apple sues OpenAI over trade secrets

The Musk-Altman feud found a new gear, and Apple’s lawsuit is the fuel.

After Apple sued OpenAI for trade secret theft on July 10, 2026, Elon Musk piled on. His post on X on July 12 read: “After stealing an open source AI charity, you then stole all of Apple’s phone technology! Wow. What do you plan for an encore? That’s tough to beat.” He added that Altman could come watch SpaceX’s AI1 compute satellites fly next year “if your parole officer approves.”

Sam Altman’s counterpunch came quickly: “Homeboy, you’re the one selling public market investors on short-term space datacenters.”

The stakes behind the memes

Strip away the insults and there are real consequences on both sides of this exchange.

OpenAI is now fighting a federal lawsuit over its hardware program, filed by the most valuable consumer hardware company in the world. Trade secret litigation of that scale can shape what OpenAI is allowed to build and ship, regardless of how the jokes land.

Musk, meanwhile, is selling the market on orbital datacenters. The SpaceX AI1 compute satellites he referenced are the centerpiece of that pitch, and Altman’s jab about “short-term space datacenters” aimed directly at investor confidence in it.
