Anthropic’s cutoff was July 7, 2026: from July 8, Fable 5, the first publicly available Mythos-class model, runs on paid usage credits at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. That is double Opus 4.8, which sits at $5 and $25, and it makes Fable 5 the most expensive model on Anthropic’s current price list.

What token pricing actually means

AI models charge for the text they read and the text they write, measured in tokens. A token is roughly three quarters of a word, so a million tokens is about 750,000 words. On Fable 5, you pay $10 for every million tokens the model reads (your prompts, files, chat history) and $50 for every million tokens it writes back.

For casual use, the numbers are small: a chat costs cents. The pain shows up in heavy workloads. Coding and agent sessions burn tokens fast, and a workday that produces 2 million output tokens costs $100 on Fable 5, versus $20 on Sonnet 5. Same work, five times the bill.

Why subscribers revolted

The math above explains the backlash. Subscribers already pay a monthly plan, and now the top model runs a meter on top of it. Paying twice for the same product is the kind of change that generates instant pushback, and it did.

Anthropic responded by softening the transition: existing Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise subscribers keep included access to Fable 5 until July 12. After that, the meter starts for everyone.

The choice this forces

Every Fable 5 user now faces the same decision. If your work genuinely benefits from the strongest available model, $50 per million output tokens may be a fair price for the edge. If Opus 4.8 handles your workload at half the cost, the premium is hard to justify as a default.

The era of one flat price for the best model, at least at Anthropic, is on pause. Would you pay per token for the top model, or is Opus enough?
