Tesla's Cybercab carried its first public passengers in Austin

The first production car with nothing for a human to grab carried its first public passengers through Austin.

What happened at the event

At Tesla’s September 3, 2026 event, the two-seat gold Cybercab, no steering wheel, no pedals, gull-wing doors, began carrying members of the public on open roads. Attendees rode first, phones out, some chanting “Cybercab” as the doors opened outside ACL Live. Wider access starts Friday through the existing Robotaxi app, geofenced to parts of Austin.

The federal reaction was immediate: NHTSA, the US auto safety agency, said the same day that it is evaluating the rollout. Tesla Asia, meanwhile, is already teasing appearances in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Beijing and Shanghai.

Why the missing wheel matters

A robotaxi built from a normal car is a retrofit, and a human can always take over. A car with no controls at all is a different engineering claim: the software never needs one. Two weeks ago the open question was whether Tesla would put a paying stranger inside that claim. That line has now been crossed, and every ride in Austin is a public test of it, with a federal agency watching in real time.
