Chrome's Web Store removed uBlock Origin and every Manifest V2 extension

Chrome finished the job on August 31: every Manifest V2 extension is gone from the Web Store, uBlock Origin included.

The final step

Google’s Manifest V3 migration had been squeezing the old extension format for two years. The last step, as Chrome Unboxed reported on August 31, 2026, permanently delisted all Manifest V2 extensions from the Chrome Web Store. Copies already installed are frozen: no updates, no bug fixes, no new filter lists, and an uninstalled extension cannot be recovered from Google.

What happens to the ad blocker

The extension most people mean is uBlock Origin. Its developer never ported the full version to Manifest V3 because the new format limits how a blocker can filter requests. The official successor is uBlock Origin Lite, with fewer features, and AdGuard’s V3 version is the other common replacement.

Brave took the opposite route. It hosts four Manifest V2 extensions on its own infrastructure, uBlock Origin, AdGuard, NoScript and uMatrix, and says it will keep supporting them.

When users will notice

For most people nothing changes until the day a frozen blocker breaks on a site and no update is coming. The choice at that point is a lighter blocker on Chrome, a browser that still runs the original, or ads. The removal turns a two-year policy argument into a decision every Chrome user will eventually make on their own.
