Europe opens its call for seven AI gigafactories worth 30 billion euro

On July 30, 2026, the European Commission officially opened the call for up to seven AI gigafactories, combining advanced chips, cloud and data centers to train next-generation AI. Roughly 10 billion euro of public funding is designed to unlock about 20 billion euro in private investment; bids close November 12, winners are expected in early 2027, and sites should be operational around mid-2028. 76 consortia across 10 countries have signaled preliminary interest.

RAM prices jumped from $2.80 to about $12 per gigabyte in a year, a roughly sixfold surge, as memory makers redirect capacity to high-bandwidth memory for AI data centers. Qualcomm told customers chip prices rise by double digits for shipments after September 1, Google confirmed Pixel 11 prices are going up with reports pointing to about a $100 increase and a $899 starting price, and the memory bill for a 16GB flagship went from roughly $45 to about $192.
