Xiaomi's humanoid robot demo has another humanoid robot behind the camera

Xiaomi posted a video of its humanoid robot at work, and the twist was behind the camera.

The footage, released July 31, 2026 and reported by Xinhua, shows a Xiaomi humanoid performing tasks in a work environment. The reveal is that the camera operator filming it is also a humanoid robot.

Read it as a promo, but read the right part

It is a promotional video, and worth treating as one. Nothing in it is an independent capability test.

But the thing being demonstrated is not walking or grasping, both of which are solved enough now to be boring. It is two robots holding different roles in the same space at the same time, one doing the work and one documenting it. Role differentiation, not locomotion, is the claim.

Xiaomi’s track record here

The company has been running humanoids in its EV factory since earlier this year, where it described them as being like interns. It also showed a robot picking up a phone and taking a photo with it back in June.

That progression matters for reading the new video. A robot operating a camera is a smaller step when the same company already showed one operating a phone camera two months earlier, and already has machines doing repetitive factory tasks.

Where this actually goes

The version of this that changes anything is not one robot doing one job well. It is teams of them covering different roles across a warehouse, a hospital, or a film set, with nobody human in the frame.

A single humanoid is a tool. Several humanoids coordinating on differentiated tasks is a workforce, and that is a very different thing to price, staff around, or regulate. This video is a marketing gesture at that future, not evidence of it, but it is the right future to be gesturing at.
