One of the field’s most-cited handicappers just shortened the race dramatically.

The estimate

Kai-Fu Lee told Bloomberg the US lead in frontier AI has narrowed from 3 or 4 years to roughly six months. His framing: an iPhone versus Android dynamic, where one side holds the premium frontier and the other wins on openness, price and volume.

The volume side of the argument

The numbers behind the Android half: daily token consumption in China reached 500 trillion by mid-2026, with Chinese models priced 60 to 90% below OpenAI and Anthropic equivalents.

Six months is close enough that a single delayed training run or export-control change could flip individual benchmarks. The more durable difference is the business model split: frontier margin on one side, commodity volume on the other, and both sides now shipping models good enough for most workloads.
