Meta pulls Muse Image four days after launch following likeness backlash

Meta killed its Muse Image feature four days after launch.

On Friday, July 11, 2026, Meta pulled the AI tool that let anyone generate images from public Instagram profiles, admitting the feature “missed the mark,” as reported by Variety.

Four days from launch to shutdown

The timeline is remarkable for its speed. Meta launched Muse Image on July 7, 2026, with public adult accounts opted in by default. Criticism built over the following days, and by July 11 the feature was discontinued.

The backlash came fast and from organized places. CAA, the talent agency, said no one’s name, image, likeness or creative work should be used by AI without clear, documented consent. SAG-AFTRA urged its members to opt out. When the institutions representing the most imitated faces in the world push back within days, a likeness feature has a short life expectancy.

If you opted out, stay opted out

We covered Muse Image and its opt-out path two days before the shutdown. If you flipped the switch then, keep it off: the “Sharing and reuse” setting still exists in Instagram and controls how your content can be reused with Meta’s AI features.

That detail matters more than it looks. The feature died; the underlying permission did not. The setting that governed Muse Image remains the setting that governs whatever Meta builds on your content next.

Public pressure works

That is the story here, more than any product detail. A feature with backwards consent mechanics, default opt-in, no notification, no retroactive removal, met immediate, loud, organized resistance, and a company with Meta’s resources reversed itself in four days.

It is also a preview of the fight ahead. Likeness generation is not going away; this version of it just launched with terms the public would not accept. The open question is whether opt-in consent for AI likeness features becomes law, or stays a lesson each platform learns one backlash at a time.
