DeepSeek's Liang Wenfeng becomes the world's richest AI founder at $36 billion

The richest AI founder in the world is not in Silicon Valley. He is in Hangzhou.

The number

On July 14, 2026, Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index put DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng’s fortune at $36 billion, more than doubled from $16.7 billion. That makes him the wealthiest creator of AI models on the planet, ahead of Anthropic’s Dario Amodei and OpenAI’s Greg Brockman.

The math behind it

The jump traces to one event: DeepSeek closed its first-ever external funding round in June, raising over $7.4 billion at a valuation above $50 billion, six times what the company was worth in early 2025.

The reason that valuation translated into personal wealth so directly is ownership. Unlike his US rivals, diluted by years of venture rounds, Liang still controls about 78% of DeepSeek. He even put roughly $3 billion of his own money into the round, investing alongside Tencent, CATL and China’s state AI fund.

The structure is very Liang

The terms of the round say as much about him as the numbers. Most investors got no voting rights and a five-year lock-up. Capital came in; control did not go out.

The background fits the pattern. Liang built DeepSeek in 2023 out of the AI division of High-Flyer, the quant hedge fund he founded with two university classmates. A quant’s instincts run through the whole structure: concentrated ownership, patient capital, minimal outside interference.

Compare that with the standard frontier-lab trajectory, where founders trade equity for compute round after round, and the DeepSeek model looks almost contrarian. Own 78%, answer to almost no one, let the models speak.

Whether that structure is replicable outside China, or outside a founder who can write a $3 billion personal check, is another question. But as of this week, the scoreboard says the most financially successful AI model builder in the world runs a company where he still holds nearly four-fifths of the equity. That is a data point every AI founder will be thinking about.
