Take-Two says GTA 6 was built with zero generative AI

As studios race to cut costs with AI, the biggest game of the decade is a deliberate bet the other way.
What Take-Two said
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick says generative AI played zero part in building GTA 6, describing Rockstar’s worlds as handcrafted building by building and street by street. The scale is the argument: GTA 6 has well over 600,000 NPC animations, roughly twice Red Dead Redemption 2’s 300,000 and more than ten times GTA 5’s 55,000. Every asset was made by human artists, and Rockstar built a dedicated team in Los Angeles to art direct NPCs individually rather than mixing them procedurally.
Why it matters
Zelnick drew a clear line between AI as a support tool and AI as a creative engine. Take-Two still uses AI for testing and internal productivity across its projects, just not to generate the game world. The bet is that handcrafted detail is exactly what makes a flagship title worth billions, even as generative tools get cheaper every month. It sets up a visible test: whether players notice, or care about, the difference between a hand-built world and an AI-assisted one.
