Google cancels the AI Studio mobile app after 800,000 pre-orders, folds it into Gemini

Google AI Studio’s mobile app is dead, and about 800,000 people had already pre-ordered it.

On July 31, 2026, the Google AI Studio team posted that the iOS and Android app will not ship. Their words: thank you to the roughly 800,000 of you that pre-ordered our mobile app, it is clear people are interested in building software on the go.

Where the features go instead

Instead of another download, the app-building features move into Gemini, “one where apps emerge naturally, in the course of your everyday conversations with Gemini”, on mobile and desktop.

The AI Studio web experience stays. No rollout timeline was given for the Gemini version, which means 800,000 pre-order signups are now waiting on an unspecified date for a different product.

The reply that got the most laughs came from a user pointing out this is unusual for Google, which normally kills an app after launching it.

The product thesis being tested

What is actually being tested here is a bet: that vibe-coding does not need its own destination app, it needs to live inside the assistant you already have open. In that view, building an app should be a thing that happens mid-conversation, not a place you go.

If that is right, a lot of standalone AI tools are in trouble, because the assistant becomes the front door for everything and single-purpose apps get absorbed one by one. If it is wrong, Google just traded 800,000 warm signups for a maybe.

The signal for builders
