OpenAI's first gadget is Codex Micro, a $230 physical remote for AI agents
OpenAI hardware is real now. Meet Codex Micro, a $230 physical remote for AI agents.
The launch
On July 15, 2026, OpenAI and keyboard maker Work Louder launched Codex Micro, a $230 desktop controller for managing Codex coding agents. It is sold as a limited run through Supply Co, available while stock lasts.
It is a niche product by design, aimed at developers who already run multiple coding agents and want their status and controls off the screen and onto the desk.
What the hardware does
The device packs 13 mechanical switches, a joystick, a touch sensor, and a dial that adjusts how much reasoning an agent puts into a task. Turning model effort into a physical knob is the standout idea: reasoning depth becomes something you dial up like gain on a mixing board.
Six illuminated agent keys show status at a glance: white means idle, blue thinking, green done, red error. You can assign shortcuts for push-to-talk, sending instructions, and approving or rejecting code changes. The whole interaction model treats a fleet of agents like channels on a console, monitored peripherally and steered with fingers instead of tab-switching.
The bigger hardware picture
OpenAI says Codex Micro is separate from the consumer hardware project it is building with Jony Ive, so this is not a preview of that device. But it is still the company’s first gadget, and first gadgets tend to reveal how a company thinks about physical interfaces.
What this one reveals: OpenAI sees agent operation as a real-time, hands-on activity, closer to operating equipment than to chatting. Turning agentic coding into something you drive like a mixing desk is a bet that supervising AI will feel more like a control room than a conversation.
At $230 in a limited run, it is a collectible experiment as much as a product. Whether a joystick for your agents ends up on your setup wishlist probably depends on how many of them you already run.
