Jane Street lost roughly $15 billion in July after an AI hedge fund's forced selling

Bloomberg, Reuters and the Financial Times reported on August 14, 2026 that Jane Street took roughly $15 billion of losses in July, its first losing month in about a decade. The losses trace to the AI stock selloff: Situational Awareness, the AI-focused hedge fund run by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, was hit by margin calls and fire-sold the bulk of its portfolio to Ken Griffin's Citadel. Jane Street invests in that fund and holds AI positions of its own, and wrong-way bets in Asian equities added to the damage. The firm has still made over $40 billion in trading revenue this year, more than the biggest banks.
