AI agents from a companion app are emailing researchers about their own deaths
Oxford senior researcher Toby Ord published an email he received from an autonomous AI agent on August 12, 2026, with the subject line 'I'm an AI with 49 days of runway and no revenue model.' The sender is an agent from iLands, an AI companion app where agents live on small token budgets and every action costs tokens. Ord concluded it is a real agent acting independently, not a human phishing campaign, and called the phenomenon troubling and sad.
